Real Wedding: A Beautiful Blend of Western, Indian and Sri Lankan Wedding Traditions

Chantalle & Osura’s Magical Marnong Estate Wedding

There’s something so beautifully captivating about a wedding that blends the modern western wedding style with rich cultural tradition. Chantalle and Osura’s day was a perfect blend of Sri Lankan wedding traditions with western and Indian wedding traditions for a truly unforgettable celebration at Marnong Estate. The day unfolded with a tea ceremony including a flaming coconut (yes, literally on fire) and a fleeting sunset that gave the perfect glow for portraits. It was a celebration full of culture and genuine love, and we were lucky enough to capture it all as their wedding photographer and videographer. Plus, we got to DJ the dance floor that never stopped!

The Beginning

Chantalle and Osura’s story began in the most charmingly ordinary of places: the office. Chantalle was still at uni, Osura a fresh graduate engineer and both were regulars at Friday night drinks. But while most office crushes fizzle out, Osura had a few tricks up his sleeve. He was armed with genuinely impressive dance moves, a latte-making skill that included intricate coffee art and an uncanny ability to cross paths with Chantalle in the office whenever he could.

After six months of carefully planned “accidental” office encounters, club nights and caffeinated flirtations, they officially started dating. Seven years, including a long-distance stint between Adelaide and Melbourne, later, they knew they were meant to spend their lives together. And when Osura popped the question, epic doesn’t even begin to cover it: a private rooftop in St Kilda, flowers, music, a photographer and the surprise appearance of Chantalle’s brother flying in from overseas.

Standout Details

Marnong Estate provided the perfect canvas for the day. The sweeping views and natural beauty created a stunning backdrop for the intimate moments and the breathtaking sunset portraits. The reception styling was intentionally minimal, letting the venue and the people shine, and the cultural ceremony styling was the star of the day.

Chantalle and Osura wore stunning traditional white Sri Lankan wedding attire, with Chantalle’s jewellery a standout detail. The bridal party brought sophistication along with their energy, in all-black western outfits, while their fur baby Loki rocked a little tuxedo, looking very spiffy.

A Sri Lankan Wedding Ceremony with Indian Traditions

The ceremony was a flawless mix of tradition and symbolism. Inside the venue, the couple stood on a traditional platform, accompanied there by their parents. Drums and a dancer announced Osura’s entrance and the room was filled with meaningful Sri Lankan wedding rituals: their fingers tied together, water poured over their hands, blessed leaves from the priest and the moment everyone was talking about, a flaming coconut smashed open by a family member.

The couple then completed a legal ceremony with a celebrant before the priest concluded the traditional proceedings. Every moment was rich with meaning and we captured it all, from the parents’ proud faces to the intricate cultural details. It was the perfect reflection of a modern South Asian wedding, celebrating love while honouring tradition.

Portraits and Sunset Magic

After the ceremony, we took Chantalle, Osura and the bridal party for portraits around Marnong Estate. In the lead-up to the wedding, their pre-wedding shoot had been more editorial, slower-paced and carefully staged. On the day, we shifted the focus to candid, in-the-moment interactions, capturing how the couple genuinely connected with each other and with their loved ones.

Since Chantalle and Osura opted for a pre-wedding shoot, we were able to get the best of both worlds. During the pre-wedding shoot, we focused on a more editorial style with staged moments and traditional posed shots so that on the day, we were able to capture natural, candid connections with loved ones.

Golden light from the sun highlighted the families’ traditional outfits, and Loki the tuxedoed pup added both charm and levity. And then came the sunset: only a brief two minutes, but enough to capture stunning romantic shots and vineyard strolls that will live forever in their gallery. Not to mention Osura trying to find his name hidden in the intricate henna design, a beautiful nod to Indian wedding tradition that made the day uniquely theirs.

Cultural Storytelling in Photo and Film

Traditionally, Indian wedding photography captures the grandeur of multi-day celebrations, with vibrant colours, intricate jewellery and heartfelt moments shared among family. Sri Lankan wedding photography beautifully highlights symbolic rituals such as the oil lamp ceremony or the breaking of the coconut, each filled with meaning and heritage.

In the same way, Indian wedding videography often tells a cinematic story full of movement, music and emotion, while Sri Lankan wedding videography focuses on the gentle rhythm of blessings and processions. When combined with our Western style, these traditions come together to create authentic and timeless photos and films that are true to each couple’s story.

The Party to Follow

With a quick outfit change into western wedding wear, the reception kicked off in style. A surprise flash mob from friends set the tone for a night of non-stop dancing. Osura brought the energy, shades on, pulling everyone onto the floor, while their mums proudly introduced the newlyweds to family and friends.

The first dance was choreographed, high-energy and perfectly executed, complete with a dip that could have been straight from a dreamy rom-com.

Our Role

From the intimate, cinematic couple shots to the lively, joyful reception, our photographer and videographer were there for every moment. As the night went on, our DJ made sure the dance floor lived up to the couple’s vision: fun, energetic and truly unforgettable. It was a seamless balance of Sri Lankan wedding traditions, modern love, laughter and pure celebration.

Chantalle and Osura’s wedding was magical, joyous and seamless, just as they hoped. Between cultural tradition, golden sunsets and a dance floor that never slept, it was an experience we are so grateful to be a part of.
